Each 2023 British Britannia 1/4 oz Silver Coin comes packaged in a protective plastic flip. The Royal Mint began production for the year using Queen Elizabeth IIs portrait one last time. Since her death occurred late in 2022, the mint had limited time to complete a replacement portrait for King Charles III. Because of that, some early 2023 Britannias were struck with the Queens image before the mint transitioned to the King.
Obverse
The obverse on the 2023 British Britannia Silver Coin varies depending on the strike. Early coins feature Jody Clarks fifth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, shown in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem. The majority of 2023 coins display Martin Jennings new left-profile portrait of King Charles III, with a simple uncrowned design. Inscriptions include either ELIZABETH II, DG REG FD, and 50 PENCE, or CHARLES III, DG REX FD, and 50 PENCE.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 2023 Britannia 1/4 oz Silver Coin carries Philip Nathans enduring 1987 depiction. Britannia stands holding her trident and Union Jack shield, with her helmet completing a design that highlights strength and maritime heritage. Inscriptions read BRITANNIA, 2023, 1/4 OZ, and 999 FINE SILVER.
