First issued in 1987, the British Gold Britannia coins have long featured Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. After her passing in September 2022, The Royal Mint began to transition to a new monarch in 2023. Before this change, they issued a final set of Britannias with Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Now, you can get the 2023 British Britannia 1 oz Gold Coins in perfect condition from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 2023 British Britannia 1 oz Gold Coins are in perfect Mint State 70 condition. This grade indicates full, original mint luster with no imperfections. As part of the final 500 struck, these coins are the last to feature Elizabeth II on the obverse.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 British Britannia Gold Coins displays a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Created by Jody Clark in 2015, this is the fifth and final effigy of Elizabeth II on British coins. Elizabeth II, Englands longest-serving monarch, was crowned on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey, with her coronation being the first televised event of its kind. Inscriptions include 100 POUNDS, ELIZABETH II, and D.G. REG. F.D.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2023 Britannia 1 oz Gold Coins showcases Britannia. Designed by Philip Nathan in 1987, this depiction shows Britannia standing along the British coast. She holds a trident in her right hand, an olive branch in her left, wears a Corinthian helmet, and carries a Union Jack shield at her side. Inscriptions read BRITANNIA, 2023, 1 OZ, and 999.9 FINE GOLD.
History
In 2023, The Royal Mint began updating the Britannia Series from effigies of Queen Elizabeth II to the first images of King Charles III. This change was significant as it was the first time another monarch appeared on these coins.
