Also featured are a pair of Niuean cleaving clubs known as katoua, which symbolize security and defense. Inscriptions on the obverse field read FIVE DOLLARS, 2023, AG .999.

The reverse of 2023 Colorized Niue Poseidon 2 oz Silver Coins features Poseidon. This memorable rendition presents the deity in close view wearing a nautical crown while holding the trident. A range of oceanic imagery, including a seahorse and octopus, can be found in the background to enhance the coins aquatic theme.

God of the Sea, Poseidon appeared in numerous classic tales of Greek mythology. He had an especially strong presence in the work of Homer, the Greek poet recognized as the author of both The Iliad and The Odyssey. In the latter, the hero Odysseus famously blinds Poseidons son, the Cyclops. In a fit of rage, Poseidon unleashes a violent storm upon Odysseus and his men, which throws them off course and delays their journey homeward by a full decade.
