Obverse

On the obverse of the 2023 Cook Islands Arethusa Gold Coin, you’ll find a masterful depiction of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief, immortalized by Ian Rank-Broadley’s iconic 1998 design for the Royal Mint. This revered design has graced countless coin programs across the Commonwealth. Inscriptions on this side read ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS, COOK ISLANDS, and 2023.

Reverse

Turn the 2023 Arethusa 1/2 Gram Gold Coin over to witness the reverse, featuring the left-profile bust of the mythological nymph, Arethusa. Enhanced by the graceful presence of dolphins in front and behind her head, and adorned with the CI initials of the Cook Islands, this design is a testament to the coin’s captivating beauty.

History

After being transformed into a spring, Arethusa found herself flowing underground, eventually emerging in the island of Ortygia in Syracuse, Sicily. In this new form, she retained her identity as Arethusa and became a famous fountain.
