First issued in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was created after the passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which directed the US Treasury to buy large amounts of American-mined silver and strike it into coins. The design was prepared by George T. Morgan, an engraver from England whose artistic background influenced the clean, classical style of the coin. His work paired a detailed Liberty portrait on the obverse with a strong heraldic eagle on the reverse. Thanks to its balanced design and solid silver content, the Morgan Dollar became one of the most familiar coins in US history. The US Mint brought the design back in 2021 as a modern bullion issue. Obverse
On the obverse of the 2023 Morgan Dollar Coins, Lady Liberty is shown in a left-facing profile. She wears a Phrygian cap with a coronet, and a laurel wreath is woven into her hair. This design stays true to George T. Morgans original artwork while maintaining the historic details collectors expect from the series. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 2023.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2023 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins displays the classic heraldic eagle designed by Morgan. The bald eagle faces forward with its wings fully extended, holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Unlike later US coin designs, this eagle does not feature a national shield, giving it a distinct and traditional appearance. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
The Morgan Dollar briefly returned to production in 1921 after decades of inactivity. This revival followed the Pittman Act, which required the replacement of millions of silver dollars that had been melted and sold to Great Britain during World War I. More than 86 million coins were struck that year across three different US Mint facilities. Although widely available today, the 1921 issue marked the end of the Morgan Dollar, as the design was replaced later that year by the Peace Dollar.
