Designed by Martin Jennings, this portrait first debuted in 2022 after receiving the official stamp of approval from His Majesty. Also on the obverse are inscriptions reading CHARLES III, D G REX F D, 25 POUNDS, 2023.
Reverse
King Arthur himself graces the reverse of 2023 Proof British 1/4 oz Gold Coins. This design is credited to David Lawrence and captures the king in an iconic pose as he holds the sword known as Excalibur. You will see inscriptions along the reverse edge that read KING ARTHUR, MYTHS, and LEGENDS, 2023.
History
The Legend of King Arthur generally begins with a famous episode known as the Sword in the Stone. In this story, Arthur is a young boy who encountered a sword in an anvil atop a stone on Christmas Eve. According to Merlin, only a true king could remove the sword. Arthur succeeded, proving that he was in fact the heir of Uther Pendragon.
