Scholars debate the actual historicity of King Arthur. Writings from the 9th and 10th centuries suggest that a person named Arthur led a resistance against the Saxons that included 12 battles. And yet the central source of these claims, Nenniuss Historia Brittonum, seems to rely on a poetic text for its notions about Arthur. This makes such historical claims dubious, leading most to appreciate Arthur simply as a figure of legend.
