Obverse
Martin Jennings’ portrayal of King Charles III is featured on the obverse of the 2023 Proof British Merlin Silver Coins. As the first effigy of the monarch during his reign, the portrait was minted in 2022 and shows the king without a crown on his head. Inscriptions on this side include CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., 2 POUNDS, and 2023.
Reverse
Merlin, the legendary wizard of Camelot, is portrayed on the reverse side of the 2023 Proof Merlin 1 oz Silver Coin. Despite differing accounts of his origin story, Merlin is widely regarded as one of the most important characters in Arthurian legend and was a close confidant of King Arthur. The inscriptions on this face read MERLIN, MYTHS, LEGENDS, and 2023.
History
The earliest written reference to Camelot comes from the French poet Chrtien de Troyes, who wrote several Arthurian romances in the late 12th century. In his work, Camelot is described as a magnificent castle with richly decorated chambers and a splendid garden.
