Obverse
Martin Jennings designed the obverse design elements of the 2023 Proof British Merlin Silver Coins, which highlight the first-ever portrait of King Charles III. The portrayal of the new monarch without a crown on his head is in the left profile and follows the British tradition of ditching a crown for male monarchs and changing orientation from one monarch to the next. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., 5 POUNDS, and 2023.
Reverse
At the back of the 2023 Proof Merlin 2 oz Silver Coin, the reverse visuals illustrate the infamous wizard from King Arthur’s court. Merlin’s reputation as a trusted advisor to King Arthur has made him one of the central figures in Arthurian mythology. The inscriptions on this side include MERLIN, MYTHS AND LEGENDS, and 2023.
History
In some versions of the legend, Merlin is said to have been born from a human mother and an incubus, or a demon that takes on a male form and impregnates women in their sleep. This gave him supernatural powers and a connection to the world of magic.
