In the Modern Trade Dollar Series, the East India Company and the Issuing Authority of St. Helena offer collectors a beautiful, modern interpretation of 19th-century trade dollars. After previously issuing a different series, the East India Company is back with an all-new twist on the designs. Provident Metals now has 2023 Proof Japanese Trade Dollar 1 oz Gold Coins available to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase one of these 2023 Proof Japanese Trade Dollar 1 oz Gold Coins online at Provident Metals, you will receive a proof specimen with a protective case and a numbered Certificate of Authenticity from the mint. These coins have frosted design elements and mirrored background fields.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 Proof Japanese Trade Dollar Gold Coin comes with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. This design depicts the Queen at the age of 89 and was created for the Royal Mint in 2015 by Jody Clark. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include QUEEN ELIZABETH II, ST. HELENA, 5 POUNDS, and 2023.
Reverse
On the reverse field of the 2023 Proof Japanese Trade Dollar 1 oz Coin, you will find a depiction of the Japanese dragon. Long used as a symbol of the empire and of the emperors of Japan, the dragon was a powerful emblem. Here, it is shown in the foreground clutching a pearl in its talons as the globe in the background focuses on the islands of Japan. Inscriptions include TRADE DOLLAR and the East India Company mint mark.
History
The original Japanese trade dollar was introduced in 1874 by the Osaka Mint. The coins had 90% silver content and were eventually produced between 1875 and 1877, with the greatest volume of coins produced in 1875.
