The introduction of the original Japanese silver trade dollar in 1874 was precipitated by a three-year expedition by Japanese dignitaries. Known as the Iwakura Mission, this collection of Japanese dignitaries traveled the world representing the Emperor of Japan between 1871 and 1873. At this point in history, Japan was looking to expand its economy regionally and globally.
