Obverse

The coin’s obverse side features a vivid pink Rabbit built from detailed Portuguese-inspired tiles with geometric patterns. It’s surrounded by fine engravings of lotus flowers and accompanied by the inscriptions “MACAU, CHINA,” “500 PATACAS,” and “2023” in both English and Mandarin.

Reverse

The reverse side is dominated by a high-relief engraving of that site with the inscription “OLD CITY WALLS” in English, Mandarin, and Portuguese, along with a verification of the coin’s silver content.

History

After it returned to the fold of Chinese rule following a period as a Portuguese Colony, the Special Administrative Region of Macau has been tasked among other things with preserving the region’s unique history and culture. A fusion of Portuguese and Chinese art and architecture, cuisine and tradition that built up over centuries remains a part of Macau’s identity to this day, with World Heritage Sites like the Old City Walls still preserved as one of the world’s most densely-populated and prosperous cities has grown around them. This extends to currency, with the Monetary Authority of Macau continuing to issue the Macanese Pataca with a value pegged directly to that of the Hong Kong Dollar.
