History

The Erie were Native Americans who lived in Northern Ohio along with parts of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Western New York. They are most associated with inhabiting the southern shores of the Great Lake that would become Erie. Jesuit accounts suggest the Erie were an organized community made up of several divisions. The Erie people were eventually wiped out by the Iroquois, who sought to take control of the fur trade in what is now known as the Beaver Wars.
