History
Like monkeys and humans, gorillas are part of the mammal order known as primates. Within this order there is a suborder known as the strepsirrhines, which in turn leads to the infraorder called the simians. Here you will find the superfamily Hominoidea, which includes apes and humans. The Western gorilla was initially described by Thomas Staughton Savage and naturalist Jeffries Wyman in 1847. The Eastern Gorilla, which includes the mountain gorilla subspecies, was then discovered in 1902 by German officer Friedrich Robert von Beringe.
