In honor of these beloved characters, The East India Company has released a new design in their Una and the Lion collection. This time around, they are depicted in a contemporary Art Nouveau style from the acclaimed artist Glyn Davies. Obverse
King Charles III graces the obverse of these Una and the Lion Coins for the very first time. In this effigy from Glyn Davies, His Majesty faces left, appearing both graceful and dignified. Inscriptions on the obverse read KING CHARLES III D G REX F D, ST. HELENA 2 POUNDS.
Reverse
Una and her lion are featured on the reverse of 2023 Proof St. Helena 1/4 oz Gold Coins. In this exceptional design from Glyn Davies, the pair are shown in a front-facing position surrounded by beautiful vines. Along the edge, inscriptions read UNA AND THE LION, 2023.
History
We meet the courageous princess Una in Book I of Edmund Spensers The Faerie Queene. The lion meanwhile is a fierce creature who becomes her noble companion on a quest to find the Redcrosse Knight. The story concludes with the knight defeating a dragon who has captured Unas parents. This famous scene is inspired by the legend of St. George and the Dragon.
