Obverse

On the obverse of 2023 Mountain Gorilla 2 oz Silver Coins the Emblem of Rwanda is found. In the center of this design there is a cog wheel along with a woven basket, coffee branch, and stem of sorghum. Surrounding the emblem are inscriptions that read BANKI NKURU YU RWANDA, AMAFARANGA, 50 MIRONGO ITANU.

Reverse

Upon the reverse of 2023 Rwandan 2 oz Silver Coins there is a trio of mountain gorillas engraved with exquisite artistry. To complement this rendering, a motif of the African continent also appears on the reverse along with inscriptions reading AFRICAN OUNCE, 2008-2023, 2 OZ FINE SILVER .999.

History

The mountain gorilla subspecies was discovered in 1902 by Friedrich Robert von Beringe. A German army officer, Von Beringe killed a pair of apes while traveling through the Virunga Mountains. He then shipped the gorillas to Berlins Natural History Museum, where an examination revealed they were distinct from the commonly known western gorilla. A new species called the eastern gorilla was thus established. It was later split into the subspecies that today we call Grauers gorilla and the mountain gorilla.
