Obverse
In the obverse design of the 2023 Somalia Elephant Gold Coin, you will find the national coat of arms. In the design, you will find the crowned shield of the nation with a background field of horizontal lines and a single star in the center of the design element. The shield is supported on either side by leopards, with fern leaves and spears crossed below. Inscriptions read SOMALI REPUBLIC, 2023, and 500 SHILLINGS.
Reverse
For the reverse design of 2023 Elephant 1/2 oz Gold Coins, you will see an African bush elephants head. This years design shows the elephant reaching for leaves in a tree with its trunk. The inscriptions include AFRICAN WILDLIFE, ELEPHANT, and 1/2 OZ AU 999.9.
History
The 1999 debut of the African Wildlife Series included 1 oz gold and silver coins in the Zambia Elephant Series. After five issues, the series was transitioned to Somalia as the nation of issue. Though the nation of issue changed, the design focus stayed the same on the reverse.
