The Burnished American Silver Eagle is known as the Uncirculated collector edition of the series and is recognized for its smooth, matte-like finish. This appearance is different from both the standard bullion strike and the highly polished Proof version. Struck at the West Point Mint with a W mint mark, these coins are produced using specially treated burnished blanks and are issued in limited numbers for collectors. Their lower mintages and distinctive look offer an alternative to traditional bullion coins. Currently, certified 2023-W Burnished American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2023-W Burnished American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin offered here has earned a perfect MS70 grade from NGC. Coins with this designation show full mint luster and no visible marks. The Advanced Release label indicates that these coins were delivered to NGC for grading before their official release to the public, making them an appealing option for collectors who value early-graded examples.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023-W Burnished American Eagle Silver Coin displays the well-known Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman. Liberty is shown walking toward the sun on the horizon, wrapped in the American flag and holding branches in her hand. The design has been admired for more than a century and continues to reflect themes of renewal and forward progress in American coinage. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2023.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2023-W Burnished Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin features the updated bald eagle design created by Emily Damstra. Introduced in 2021, this image shows the eagle in flight from a lower perspective, carrying an oak branch in its talons. The detailed artwork presents a more natural view of the national bird while maintaining its traditional symbolism. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER.
History
The Burnished Silver Eagle was first introduced by the United States Mint in 2006 during the 20th anniversary celebration of the American Silver Eagle program. Production continued through 2008 before pausing in 2009 and 2010. Since 2011, the Mint has issued Burnished Eagles each year. The highest mintage came in 2007 with 621,333 coins struck, while the 2023 mintage totaled 160,865 coins.
