Obverse
On the obverse of the 2024 Antique Ghana Imperial Guardian Lions Silver Coins, you’ll find a portrait of King Charles III. This first-generation effigy presents His Majesty in a left-profile view without a crown, aligning with the tradition of showing male monarchs uncrowned in their early coin portraits. This design is consistent with the practice of altering the orientation of monarch portraits with each reign. Inscriptions on this side read REPUBLIC OF GHANA, CHARLES III, TEN CEDIS, AG 999 50 G, and 2024.
Reverse
The reverse side of 2024 Antique Imperial Guardian Lions 50 Gram Silver Coins showcases two colorized Guardian Lions. These majestic creatures are positioned facing each other, with the lion in the foreground featuring blue and purple tones, while the one in the background displays red and orange hues. This vibrant design brings the guardian lions to life.
History
During China’s imperial dynasties, the use of guardian lions became increasingly prevalent, with the most impressive and ornate examples found in the palaces and temples of the emperor and other high-ranking officials. The size, material, and level of detail of the lions often reflected the status and wealth of the patron who commissioned them.
