History

Geronimo, whose birth name was Goyahkla, was born around 1829 and became a respected Bedonkohe Apache leader and spiritual figure. Raised in the Gila River area, he followed long-standing Apache customs and traditions. In 1851, a violent attack by Mexican soldiers resulted in the loss of his mother, wife, and children. That event deeply affected him and led to many years of resistance against both Mexican and American forces moving into Apache lands.
