Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 Australian Chinese Myths and Legends Four Guardian Silver Coin features a portrait of King Charles III. This left-profile design by Dan Thorne was introduced in 2024 and is the first Australian coin to showcase the new King without a crown. The inscriptions include CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, 1 OZ 9999 AG, and 1 DOLLAR.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 2024 Chinese Myths and Legends Four Guardian 1 oz Silver Coins, the Four Guardians of Chinese mythology are depicted in detail. In the center is a turtle, with a tiger to the left, a dragon below, and a phoenix overhead. A snake is also visible beside the turtle. The reverse includes the P125 mint mark, celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint. Inscriptions include P125 and 2024.
History
Among the Four Guardians, the Azure Dragon, or Qinglong, is the most well-known. This guardian is associated with the spring season and the wood element. It represents good fortune, leadership, and prosperity. Ancient Chinese astronomers also linked the Azure Dragon to the stars, believing its influence was strongest during the spring equinox, adding further significance to its role.
