History
Reproduction in giraffes is a fascinating process. After a gestation period of about 15 months, female giraffes give birth standing up, with the newborn calf dropping nearly 6 feet (1.8 meters) to the ground. Calves are able to stand and walk within hours of birth, a crucial adaptation for survival in the wild. Young giraffes stay with their mothers for up to 18 months before becoming independent.
