Obverse

The obverse of the 2024 Australian Rectangular Dragon Gold Coins features His Majesty King Charles III. This is the first time His Majesty appears on this series. The portrait, created by Dan Thorne, shows King Charles III in a left-profile view, dressed in a simple suit without a crown. The inscriptions on this side read CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, 100 DOLLARS, and 1 OZ 9999 AU.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2024 Rectangular Dragon 1 oz Gold Coin depicts the mythical Chinese dragon with its eyes locked on a flaming pearl. The background includes stylized water and clouds, representing the elements the dragon controls and symbols of good luck. Inscriptions here read 2024 and the P125 mint mark.

History

Dragons are very closely associated with water in Chinese culture and mythology. The Jiaolong is a specific type of Chinese dragon associated with flood control. Unlike other dragons, it lacks horns. In Chinese mythology, the Jiaolong was said to live in the Yellow River and could cause flooding if angered. Consequently, it was often depicted on bridges and other water-related structures as a form of protection and appeasement.
