St. George is a significant figure in British culture and currency. Since 1817, St. George has been a prominent figure on British currency, and his folklore roots extend even further back. Today, the 2024 British St. George and the Dragon 1/4 oz Gold Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 2024 British St. George and the Dragon 1/4 oz Gold Coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins are sold individually in plastic flips. Larger quantities come in plastic tubes of 25 coins or Monster Boxes of 500 coins, each containing 20 tubes.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2024 British St. George and the Dragon Gold Coins, there is a bust of His Majesty King Charles III. Martin Jennings designed this image for The Royal Mint in late 2022, and it debuted in 2023. His Majesty is shown in left-profile relief without a crown. The inscriptions read CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., and 25 POUNDS.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2024 St. George and the Dragon 1/4 oz Gold Coins features an image of St. George by Jody Clark. St. George is depicted on horseback, riding over a dragon and slaying the beast with his spear. This depiction is a common one in both art and currency designs. The inscriptions include 2024 beneath the design, with micro text that repeats around the edge that reads 1/4 OZ, FINE GOLD, 999.9, and 2024.
History
The legend of St. George and the Dragon has inspired many British writers. For instance, Edmund Spenser’s epic poem “The Faerie Queene” (1590) includes a character named Redcrosse Knight, who is an allegory for St. George. The dragon-slaying scene in this work is particularly vivid and detailed.
