St. George is one of the most renowned characters in British folklore. His tale of defeating a dragon became so important in British culture that it appeared on British coins starting in 1817 with the Gold Sovereign. The Royal Mint now offers a new coin series celebrating the legendary tale of St. George and the Dragon. Right now, 2024 British St. George and the Dragon 1 oz Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2024 British St. George and the Dragon 1 oz Gold Coin offered here comes in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins are available individually in plastic flips. Obverse
The obverse design of the 2024 British St. George and the Dragon Gold Coin features a bust of His Majesty King Charles III. In this 2022 design by Martin Jennings, His Majesty is shown in left-profile relief, without a crown on his head. Inscriptions here include CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., and 100 POUNDS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2024 St. George and the Dragon 1 oz Gold Coin shows a modern image of the hero on horseback. In this design, St. George rides over a dragon and kills it with his spear, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Inscriptions on this side read 2024, 1 OZ, .9999, and FINE GOLD in a repeating pattern around the edge, with 2024 also engraved beneath the design element.
History
St. George became the patron saint of England during the 14th century, largely due to the popularity of this legend. King Edward III made him the patron of the Order of the Garter in 1348, further cementing his importance in English culture.
