When Henry Tudor ascended to the throne in 1485, he aimed to legitimize his rule by embracing his Welsh ancestry. The Red Dragon of Wales was adopted as a prominent Tudor symbol, known as the Tudor Dragon. Now, the 2024 British Tudor Beasts The Tudor Dragon 1/4 oz Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.

Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 British Tudor Beasts The Tudor Dragon Gold Coin features King Charles III in left-profile relief. This design, created by Martin Jennings in 2022, shows the king without a crown. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., and 25 POUNDS.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2024 Tudor Beasts The Tudor Dragon 1/4 oz Gold Coin depicts the Red Dragon of Wales, a symbol of the Tudor lineage. The dragon is shown seated with its wings raised, holding a shield that bears the Beaufort Portcullis, connecting it to the House of Beaufort. The inscriptions include TUDOR DRAGON, 1/4 OZ, FINE GOLD, 999.9, and 2024.
History
The Tudor Dragon, often shown with the Beaufort Portcullis, holds significant meaning for the Tudor dynasty. When Henry VII became king, he incorporated the portcullis into royal symbolism, using it extensively in architecture, coinage, and official documents. This served to emphasize his Beaufort lineage and legitimize his claim to the throne.
