Scottsdale Mint introduced the Cayman Islands Sea Life Series in 2018, featuring the Marlin on its gold and silver coins. By 2023, the series expanded to include the Stingray and Loggerhead Turtle. In 2024, the collection makes a return with fresh designs for these cherished sea creatures. Right now, you can find the 2024 Cayman Islands Sea Life Loggerhead Turtle 1/10 oz Gold Coins available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2024 Cayman Islands Sea Life Loggerhead Turtle 1/10 oz Gold Coin is a proof-like specimen that showcases a blend of frosted details and mirrored fields. These coins come secured in protective acrylic capsules, marking the second release featuring the Loggerhead Turtle in the Sea Life Series.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 Cayman Islands Sea Life Loggerhead Turtle Gold Coins displays the coat of arms of the Cayman Islands. The seal features a shield divided with a heraldic lion in the upper section, while three stars are set against stylized waves in the lower section. Above the shield, a turtle and a pineapple are depicted. Inscriptions read 2024, CAYMAN ISLANDS, 2 DOLLAR, TENTH TROY OZ, and 9999 FINE GOLD.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2024 Sea Life Loggerhead Turtle 1/10 oz Gold Coins is an image of the turtle gracefully swimming in Caribbean waters. Caribbean loggerheads face many challenges, including habitat loss, pollution, and accidental capture in fishing gear. Climate change also poses significant threats, affecting hatchling sex ratios and causing beach erosion, which reduces suitable nesting sites. Inscriptions include CAYMAN ISLANDS and LOGGERHEAD TURTLE.
History
The loggerhead turtle is a well-known species in the Caribbean Sea, recognized for its large head and strong jaws. These marine reptiles are vital to the region’s ecosystem, helping maintain the health of coral reefs and seagrass beds. Adult loggerheads can reach lengths of up to 3 feet and can weigh between 155 to 375 pounds, making them one of the larger sea turtle species in the Caribbean.
