Each 2024 Colorized EC8 Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner and Kraken 1 oz Silver Coin at Provident Metals is packaged in a capsule with a display box and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. This version includes a colorized reverse that illustrates the nighttime sea disrupted by the sudden appearance of a Kraken.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 Colorized EC8 Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner and Kraken Silver Coin features the official seal of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. This institution has been in place since 1983 and oversees the Eastern Caribbean dollar. The currency has been pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of EC$2.70 to US$1 since 1976. The inscriptions include EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK, 1 OZ .999 SILVER, and TWO DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2024 Colorized EC8 Rum Runner and Kraken 1 oz Silver Coin depicts a classic sailing ship facing off against a rising Kraken. Over time, Caribbean lore gave the Kraken unique traits different from the European version, often used in stories passed down by sailors and pirates to explain vanished ships or warn others away. The inscriptions read ANTIGUA & BARBUDA and 2024.
History
During the years of American Prohibition from 1920 to 1933, the Caribbean played a major role in the transport of alcohol into the United States. Islands like Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Cuba became central to these efforts, serving as launching points for rum shipments headed north to American shores.
