The 2024 issue marks the seventh installment of the EC8 Series from Scottsdale Mint, a yearly coin program that highlights the member nations of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB). Every year, the series features new artwork for each participating country. Provident Metals now has the 2024 EC8 Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner and Kraken 1 oz Silver Coins in stock.
Highlights:
Each 2024 EC8 Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner and Kraken 1 oz Silver Coin available here is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and comes sealed in a plastic capsule. The coin has a proof-like look, with lightly frosted elements and mirror-like background fields.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 EC8 Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner and Kraken Silver Coin displays the official seal of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. The ECCB is the financial institution for eight island territories: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Inscriptions include EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK, 1 OZ .999 SILVER, and TWO DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2024 EC8 Rum Runner and Kraken 1 oz Silver Coin shows a sailing ship in the ocean, under attack by a Kraken. The Kraken legend in the Caribbean is a blend of old sailor stories and native myths. Local people often saw large sea creatures and added those sightings to their traditional tales, resulting in their own version of the Kraken story. Inscriptions read ANTIGUA & BARBUDA and 2024.
History
Rum running has strong roots in Caribbean history, beginning in the 17th century with the rise of sugar plantations. As rum became a key product of sugar production, colonial powers placed taxes and trade restrictions on it. This led to the growth of smuggling operations designed to bypass these controls.
