The most well-known lunar-themed coinage comes from the Perth Mint. Lunar Series I debuted in 1996, followed by Lunar Series II in 2008, and the Lunar Series III in 2020. With 2024 upon us, the Perth Mint continues the series with the new Year of the Dragon coinage.
What makes these unique are all the different designs they offer. Silver coins show the image of a dragon flying around the field, breathing fire as a flaming pearl is alongside it. Another option shows colorized dragons flying around the side of the field after a flaming pearl. Gold coins offer a similar design, with no flaming pearl.
Coins are available in several sizes, and various strikes such as proof and colorized versions. The 2024 Lunar Year of the Dragon Coins also shows the unique P125 mint mark for the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint. Also shown is the traditional Chinese character for the dragon.
Another option is a 10-coin set, featuring 10 unique coins from the 2024 set of releases.
These coins show a portrait of King Charles III on the obverse, along with a unique dragon flying around an array of cherry blossoms and tree lanterns. These coins are part of the world’s first Pitcairn Islands Lunar collection.
Coins are available in several unique sizes ranging from fractional ounce weights to 1 kilogram. BU coins, proof strikes, and colorized coins are all part of these 2024 releases.
Struck by the Scottsdale Mint, these coins show the dragon flying around the coin in right-profile relief. The obverse displays the Samoan coat of arms. These coins are available in three sizes (1/2 oz, 1 oz, and 2 oz) as well as various strikes (proof-like, antique, and rhodium-plated).
Crafted by the Merrick Mint, these $2 notes feature dragon-themed imagery on the obverse. One option is the Polychrome Dragon Note which shows dragons surrounding Thomas Jefferson. Another option is the Dancing Dragon Lunar Note which shows a pair of dancing dragons on the obverse. Each note arrives with a Certificate of Authenticity.
