Obverse
On the front side of the 2024 Mexican Libertad Silver Coin, you’ll see Mexico’s national coat of arms. Inspired by an Aztec symbol found in the 1524 Codex Mendoza, the design shows a golden eagle in profile, fighting a snake while perched on a prickly pear cactus. The inscription includes ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.
Reverse
On the back of the 2024 Libertad 1/20 oz Silver Coin, Winged Victory is shown in three-quarter relief. She holds a laurel wreath above her head in her right hand and broken chains in her left, with mountains visible behind her. Inscriptions here include 1/20 ONZA, PLATA PURA, 2024 LEY .999, and the mint mark.
History
The reverse side of the coin portrays the Victory Column with Winged Victory, along with the well-known mountains Popocatpetl and Iztaccihuatl. Geologically, both mountains are part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Popocatpetl is particularly significant due to its ongoing activity. Its eruptions have shaped the surrounding landscape and occasionally posed risks to nearby communities. The volcano is closely monitored, and its activity has led to evacuations in the past. Iztacchuatl, while dormant, plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem and water supply, with its glaciers feeding streams and rivers in the valley below.
