First released in 1981, the Mexican Gold Libertad emerged as a cherished gold bullion coin from the Mexican Mint, debuting six decades after the 1921 Gold Centenario, which celebrated Mexico’s 100th year of independence. Although the design of the Gold Libertad has evolved over time, its iconic imagery continues to reflect the nation’s rich history and remains beloved among investors and coin collectors alike.
Each year, the Mexican Gold Libertad series is offered in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU), Proof, and Reverse Proof finishes. The collection includes five different weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz gold, with all five weights available in BU and Proof. Additionally, since 2018, the Mexican Mint has provided a Reverse Proof option in 1 oz and 1/2 oz gold. Proof coins are characterized by their frosted design elements set against mirrored fields, while Reverse Proof coins showcase mirrored designs over frosted backgrounds.
Gold Libertad bullion coins display the Mexican coat of arms on the obverse and the goddess of Victory on the reverse. The Mexican depiction is inspired by the ancient portrayals of the Roman goddess Victoria.
The Altar of Victory, a prominent monument in the Roman Senate house, was dedicated to Victoria. This altar became a focal point of religious and political controversy in the late Roman Empire, as Christianity gained influence and challenged traditional Roman religious practices. The removal and restoration of this altar marked significant shifts in the balance of power between paganism and Christianity in Rome.
Following Mexico’s independence in 1821, the coat of arms continued to evolve. The First Mexican Empire under Agustín de Iturbide featured a crowned eagle, now perched on the cactus without the snake, surrounded by oak and laurel leaves. This version aimed to blend imperial symbolism with the traditional Aztec imagery.
