The Morgan Silver Dollar, a staple of American coinage, was initially released by the United States Mint in the 19th and early 20th centuries. First struck from 1878 to 1904 and then again in 1921, George T. Morgan’s timeless design returned in 2021. The modern Morgan Dollar is a bullion coin made from .999 pure silver. The first Morgan Dollars in 1878 ended a five-year pause in the minting of silver dollars in the United States. This break came after Congress passed a law in 1873 that ended the free coining of silver, halting the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features a portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-facing image shows Liberty with a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and laurel wreath. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 2024.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2024 Morgan Dollar Coins showcases the American bald eagle. Morgan’s design depicts the eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, representing both war and peace. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
George T. Morgan, who was then an assistant engraver at the US Mint, crafted both the obverse and reverse designs of the Morgan Dollar. His designs were used from 1878 to 1904 and made a return in 1921, following another break in silver dollar production. The Morgan Dollar was minted until December 1921 as the US Mint looked for a new silver dollar design.
