On October 15, 1794, the United States Mint issued the nations first dollar coin. Named the Flowing Hair Dollar, this coin featured Liberty in right-profile with her hair flowing freely, a design created by the Mints first Chief Engraver, Robert Scot. In 2024, the US Mint honors the 230th anniversary of this event with a special gold coin release. Right now, certified 2024 Proof American 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair 1 oz Gold Coins are available at Provident Metals.

Obverse
The obverse side of the 2024 Proof American 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin highlights Robert Scots right-facing portrait of Liberty. The depiction is known for Libertys free-flowing hair, a symbol of youthful spirit. Scot served as the US Mints first Chief Engraver from 1793 to 1823 and designed several important early American coins, including the Flowing Hair Dollar. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 2024.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2024 Proof 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair 1 oz Gold Coin showcases a classic eagle design. A small eagle is presented at the center, surrounded by a wreath that curves beautifully around it. In addition to this historic artwork, the coin features original edge lettering that reads HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT. Inscriptions on the field read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
History
The Flowing Hair Dollar, produced in 1794 and 1795, was the first official silver dollar minted by the United States. Libertys flowing hair on the obverse represented freedom, while the reverse featured a small eagle framed by a wreath. Though its production was short at the Philadelphia Mint, with just about 160,000 coins struck, the Flowing Hair Dollar helped establish the nation’s financial presence.
