In Clement Clarke Moores famous poem, Santas sleigh is pulled by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen. Many years later, in 1939, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer was added to Santas team in a story written by Robert L. May for a holiday promotion by Montgomery Ward. The use of reindeer is fitting due to their connection to northern climates, where theyve been traditionally used for pulling sleighs.
