Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 Samoa Morgan Union Dollar Silver Coin displays the Samoan coat of arms. This design includes the national crest of Samoa with a Christian cross atop a shield. The shield shows stylized ocean waves behind a palm tree in the upper field and the Southern Cross constellation in the lower field. The inscriptions include SAMOA, 1 OZ AG 999, 2024, and 2 DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2024 Morgan Union Dollar 1 oz Silver Coin showcases Lady Liberty. This design was created by George T. Morgan in 1876 for the proposed Union coin. Lady Liberty is depicted seated in right-profile relief, holding a caduceus in her right arm and a branch in her left hand. A sailing ship is seen in the harbor behind her. Inscriptions here include LIBERTY and 1876, the latter being the date of Morgan’s Union coin design.
History
Though Morgan’s design for the Union never materialized in circulation on American currency, he would go on to create several popular designs. Morgan’s most famous and enduring work is undoubtedly the Morgan silver dollar, first minted in 1878. This iconic coin featured Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. The design was notable for its departure from previous interpretations of Liberty, with Morgan using a more realistic American model, Anna Willess Williams, as his inspiration. The Morgan dollar became one of the most popular and recognizable coins in U.S. history, remaining in production until 1904 and then again for one year in 1921.
