The reverse of the 2025 Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin depicts an American bison standing on a small patch of ground in a left-profile view. The bison was modeled after Black Diamond, a real animal that lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York and served as inspiration for Frasers design. History

The artwork on the Gold Buffalo comes from James Earle Fraser, who created the original design for the Buffalo Nickel in 1913. Fraser, a prominent sculptor of the era, crafted the design to reflect American heritage. His images of a Native American on the front and a bison on the back made the Buffalo Nickel one of the most memorable coins in US history.
