Anchors have played an important role in seafaring for thousands of years, with some of the earliest examples found in civilizations as far back as 2000 BCE. These early anchors were often stones with holes carved into them, later developing into wooden frames weighted with stone or lead for better holding power. Today, you can explore this long maritime history through the 2025 Antique Samoa Nautical Anchor 1 oz Silver Coins, now available at Provident Metals.

Design
The artwork on the 2025 Antique Samoa Nautical Anchor Silver Coin centers on a modern anchor with a rope threaded through the top and wrapped around the lower frame. Todays anchors come in a variety of types from traditional Admiralty styles to more specialized plow and fluke anchors but they all serve the same purpose of helping vessels stay secure. The front of the anchor-shaped coin also includes the Samoan coat of arms, representing the issuing nation.
History
As time went on, the Greeks and Romans created more effective anchor designs using iron flukes meant to dig into the seabed, providing stronger holding power. These improvements shaped many of the principles still used in anchor construction today. In the early 19th century, British makers introduced the stockless anchor, a design that could be easily stored and lowered from a ships hawse pipe. This made it much more practical for larger ships and helped support growing international trade.
