Obverse

The obverse of the 2025 British Beowulf and the Dragon Gold Coin displays a left-profile portrait of King Charles III. Designed by Martin Jennings in 2022, this is the first official coin effigy of Charles III. In keeping with British coinage tradition, the king faces the opposite direction of his predecessor and, as a male monarch, is shown without a crown. The inscriptions include CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., and 100 POUNDS.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2025 Beowulf and the Dragon 1 oz Gold Coin, Beowulf is locked in battle with a dragon. This final fight is the culmination of his legendary journey. Though Beowulf manages to kill the dragon, he is fatally wounded in the process. His only loyal warrior, Wiglaf, stays by his side as he falls, marking the end of Beowulfs reign and an uncertain future for his people. Inscriptions here include BEOWULF & THE DRAGON, 2025, and 1 OZ FINE GOLD 999.9.

History

Beowulf is more than just a warriorhe exemplifies the virtues of an ideal Anglo-Saxon ruler, balancing courage and wisdom. Over time, he evolves from a young fighter seeking fame to a wise king who has ruled his people for decades. The poem explores themes of heroism, fate, and the cultural shift from pagan traditions to Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England.
