This depiction of His Majesty shows him without a crown, in a simple yet elegant profile. The inscriptions here include CHARLES III, D.G. REX F.D., and 100 POUNDS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2025 The Lion and The Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin showcases a stunning design by John Mercanti. The image features the American bald eagle in the foreground, looking to its left, with the British lion standing behind it, gazing in the same direction. This artwork reflects the strength and unity of the two nations. Inscriptions include THE LION AND THE EAGLE, Mercanti’s JM initials, 2025, and a repeating inscription of 1 OZ FINE GOLD 999.9.
History
The British Lion and the American Eagle are two of the most recognized symbols of national pride. The lion has been linked to Britain since the 12th century when it appeared on royal arms under Richard I, also known as the Lionheart. Over time, the lion’s imagery evolved and became central to Britains identity, appearing on coats of arms, military insignia, and colonial emblems.
