Obverse
On the obverse of the 2025 British Tudor Beasts The Greyhound of Richmond Platinum Coin is a portrait of King Charles III. Created by Martin Jennings and introduced by The Royal Mint in 2022, the portrait shows the king without a crown, facing left. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., and 100 POUNDS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2025 Tudor Beasts The Greyhound of Richmond 1 oz Platinum Coins shows the Greyhound of Richmond standing behind a shield decorated with the Three Lions. This imagery was commonly used to reinforce the Tudor claim to royal power during their reign and appeared in art, buildings, and manuscripts of the time. Inscriptions read GREYHOUND OF RICHMOND, 1 OZ, FINE PLATINUM 999.5, and 2025.
History
The Greyhound of Richmond became tied to the Tudor name through Henry VIIs mother, Margaret Beaufort. Her family, the Beauforts, used the white greyhound as a symbol. After claiming the crown, Henry included this symbol in his heraldry to support his claim to the throne. Over time, the greyhound became a regular part of Tudor visuals, seen in paintings, architecture, and royal seals.
