History

At their height, the Comanche controlled vital trade and travel corridors across the Southern Plains. They built strong trading relationships involving horses, buffalo products, and captives with French and American traders, all while using superior horsemanship to maintain dominance in the region. By the middle of the 19th century, Comancheria operated much like a nation-state, negotiating with outside powers and shaping events across a wide portion of the Plains.
