Obverse

On the obverse of the 2025 Congo Prehistoric Life Velociraptor Silver Coin is the coat of arms of the Congo. The design displays a leopards head at the center, symbolizing strength and identity. The shield is paired with a crossed elephant tusk and spear, representing both natural resources and the nations independence. Inscriptions include REPUBLIQUE DEMOCRATIC DU CONGO, 20 FRANCS, and 1 OZ AG 999.9.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2025 Prehistoric Life Velociraptor 1 oz Silver Coin features a depiction of a Velociraptor. Unlike the larger portrayals in films, actual Velociraptors were smaller dinosaurs. They stood about 18 inches tall at the hip and measured close to six feet long. Their bodies were slim and built for speed, supported by lightweight bones. A distinctive feature is the curved claw on each foot, which could reach up to 2.6 inches in length and was likely used to hold prey. Primary inscriptions read PREHISTORIC LIFE.

History

Velociraptors lived in regions that are now Central and East Asia during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 75 to 71 million years ago. These dinosaurs are often described as fast-moving and alert hunters. Some experts believe they may have had warm-blooded traits, helping them maintain active movement. There is still discussion about whether they hunted in groups. Their well-known curved claws were likely used to grip prey securely, similar to the talons of modern birds of prey.
