King Penguins are the second-largest penguin species, only surpassed in size by the Emperor Penguin. These birds are well-suited for life in the ocean, using their powerful flippers and sleek bodies to navigate cold waters with ease. The Tower Mint pays tribute to these remarkable birds found in East Falkland with a new gold and silver coin series. Now, 2025 Falkland Island King Penguin 1/2 Gram Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.

Each 2025 Falkland Island King Penguin 1/2 Gram Gold Coin is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and comes in a protective plastic flip. This release marks the beginning of an annual series from the Falkland Islands, with new reverse designs planned for future issues.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2025 Falkland Island King Penguin Gold Coin features a left-profile portrait of King Charles III, designed by Glyn Davies. As is customary on British, Commonwealth, and territorial coinage, the king is depicted without a crown. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, D.G. REX., FALKLAND ISLANDS, 25 P, and 2025.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2025 King Penguin 1/2 Gram Gold Coin, a group of King Penguins is shown. A large adult is prominently displayed in the foreground, while four more members of the colony, including a young chick, appear in the background. The Falkland Islands serve as an important nesting site for these birds, with Volunteer Point hosting one of the largest populations. Inscriptions read FALKLAND ISLANDS and KING PENGUIN.

History

Changes in ocean temperatures are affecting the distribution of the primary food sources for King Penguins, forcing some populations to travel farther south to find food. Scientists warn that this could create challenges for certain colonies, particularly those living on islands that may become too far from critical feeding grounds.
