The King Penguin is the second-largest species of penguin, second only to the Emperor Penguin. These seabirds are built for swimming, using their powerful flippers and sleek bodies to move swiftly through the water. To honor the presence of these fascinating creatures in East Falkland, the Tower Mint has introduced a new coin series in gold and silver. Right now, Provident Metals offers the 2025 Falkland Islands King Penguin 1 oz Gold Coin.
Highlights:
Each 2025 Falkland Islands King Penguin 1 oz Gold Coin is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and arrives in a protective plastic flip. This new coin series features both gold and silver options, with proof and BU versions available.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2025 Falkland Islands King Penguin Gold Coin presents a left-facing portrait of King Charles III. Designed by Glyn Davies, this image follows the traditional style used on British coinage, depicting the king without a crown. The inscriptions include CHARLES III, D.G. REX., FALKLAND ISLANDS, 5, and 2025.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2025 King Penguin 1 oz Gold Coin, a group of King Penguins is depicted in their natural environment. The design highlights a large adult penguin in the foreground, with four others, including a juvenile, in the background. The Falkland Islands serve as a key breeding ground for this species, with a significant population residing at Volunteer Point. Inscriptions here include FALKLAND ISLANDS and KING PENGUIN.
History
King Penguins have a distinctive way of moving across icy terrain called “tobogganing.” When in a hurry, they lie on their bellies and push forward with their flippers and feet, gliding smoothly across the surface. Scientists believe they use this technique both as a practical way to travel and sometimes simply for enjoyment, especially when sliding downhill.
