History
The Knights of Malta, originally known as the Knights Hospitaller, adopted the Maltese Cross while caring for sick pilgrims in Jerusalem during the Crusades. Their association with Malta began in 1530 when Charles V of Spain granted them control of the island. From that point forward, the cross became a lasting emblem of the knights, prominently featured on their banners, armor, and coinage throughout their 268-year rule.
