The HMS Bounty began as a merchant ship before being purchased by the Royal Navy in 1787 for a special mission. The ship was tasked with transporting breadfruit plants from Tahiti to the West Indies under the leadership of Lieutenant William Bligh. After being refitted for its botanical purpose, the ship set sail in December 1787 with a 46-man crew. What began as a straightforward mission turned into one of the most well-known stories in naval history. The reverse side of the 2025 Bounty 1 oz Gold Coin showcases the HMS Bounty. Originally christened Bethia, the ship was renamed by the Royal Navy when purchased. Measuring only 91 feet long, it represents the merchant vessels common in the late 18th century. Inscriptions include HMS BOUNTY and .999 AU 1 OZ.
History
Following the mutiny aboard the Bounty, Lieutenant Bligh and 18 loyal crew members were sent adrift with meager provisions, including water, bread, rum, a sextant, and a compass. Blighs incredible navigation skills allowed him to guide the overcrowded launch on a 47-day journey covering 3,618 nautical miles to safety in Timoran extraordinary feat in maritime history.
