Obverse
The obverse of the 2025 Proof Falkland Islands King Penguin Silver Coin displays a left-profile portrait of King Charles III. This design by Glyn Davies is one of the first official depictions of His Majesty to be featured on coins issued in British territories. The inscriptions include CHARLES III, D.G. REX., FALKLAND ISLANDS, 5, and 2025.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2025 Proof King Penguin 1 oz Silver Coin, a scene of King Penguins is captured in an arctic environment. A single adult penguin is prominently displayed in the foreground, with additional penguins, including a chick, visible in the background. The Falkland Islands are home to a significant King Penguin population, with Volunteer Point hosting roughly 1,500 breeding pairs. The inscriptions read FALKLAND ISLANDS and KING PENGUIN.
History
King Penguins follow an extended breeding cycle that lasts between 14 and 16 months, meaning successful pairs can only raise two chicks every three years. Instead of nesting, parents take turns keeping their single egg warm by balancing it on their feet and covering it with a fold of skin called the brood patch. This unique adaptation allows them to breed during the extreme conditions of the sub-Antarctic winter.
