The SS Tilawa, operated by the British India Steam Navigation Company, was a passenger and cargo ship traveling from Bombay to Durban in November 1942 when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Onboard was a substantial shipment of silvernearly 2,400 bars weighing about 60 tons. After resting on the seafloor for decades, the treasure was recovered in 2017 and used to create a special version of the 2025 British Silver Britannia. These coins were struck by The Royal Mint using silver recovered from the SS Tilawa, which lay submerged in the Indian Ocean for nearly three-quarters of a century. Each coin is stamped with a privy mark honoring the ship.

On the obverse of the 2025 Tilawa Privy British Britannia Silver Coin, youll find King Charles III in left-profile relief. This uncrowned portrait was created by Martin Jennings and marks the first official likeness of the King used by The Royal Mint. Inscriptions read CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., and 2 POUNDS.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2025 Tilawa Privy Britannia 1 oz Silver Coin shows the enduring image of Britannia created by Philip Nathan in 1987. She is joined by a special privy featuring an anchor encircled by the words S.S. Tilawa and the year 1942, marking the historic origin of the silver used in the coin. Inscriptions include BRITANNIA, 2025, 1 OZ, 999 FINE, and SILVER.

History

The silver cargo was recovered by Argentum Exploration Ltd., a company that specializes in deep-sea salvage operations. Using remote underwater vehicles and sonar mapping, the team found the wreck over 2,700 meters beneath the surface and retrieved the silver bars. In addition to the material loss, the attack claimed the lives of 280 out of the 732 people onboard.
