Obverse

On the obverse of the 2025-W Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin, youll find the profile of a Native American figure. This design was introduced in 1913 by artist James Earle Fraser. It combines the features of three different indigenous leaders from the early 1900s. The portrait shows the figure in right-profile relief, complete with braided hair and feathers. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2025, the W mint mark, and Fraser’s F initial.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2025-W Proof Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin shows a classic view of an American bison standing on a patch of dirt. Like the obverse, this artwork was designed by Fraser in 1913. The model for the bison was a real animal named Black Diamond, who lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York during the early 20th century. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, $50, and 1 OZ. . 9999 FINE GOLD.

History

Frasers iconic artwork originally appeared on the Buffalo Nickel, a coin that replaced the Liberty Head Nickel in 1913. His designs were chosen under President Tafts administration and became a lasting part of American coin history.
